Building Local Circular Systems: Compost, Cardboard, and Community

Scrapz is a Chesapeake-based circular economy initiative focused on keeping materials local before they enter the landfill. Through cardboard recovery, compost education, and small-scale 3D printing, Scrapz explores practical ways communities can reduce waste while strengthening local resilience.

This presentation will provide an overview of simple composting systems and demonstrate how food scraps and cardboard can work together to create soil rather than landfill waste. It will highlight partnerships with local businesses that divert usable materials and rethink waste as a shared resource. The discussion will also touch on small-scale distributed manufacturing and how tools such as recycled-material products and NFC resource-sharing devices can support cooperative local infrastructure.

The goal of the presentation is to explore how small, practical systems can help build stronger local recovery networks.
