The Conservation Committee has 3 major themes: (1) Habitat Preservation - San Diego and Imperial Counties have amazing biodiversity and unique ecosystems that are threatened by development. The biodiversity crisis is a global phenomenon: species are disappearing faster than ever in human history. (2) Climate Change is an existential risk to humanity, and we should view all of our actions through the lens of climate change. The global biodiversity crisis and climate change are deeply intertwined, acting as a "vicious cycle" where each issue exacerbates the other. (3) Quality of Life/Environmental Justice - Many areas of San Diego County and Imperial County, such as the Tijuana River Valley and the Salton Sea, experience poor air and water quality.
The Conservation Committee has made significant progress in all 3 areas by challenging sprawl development, championing strong Climate Action Plans, and collaborating with community groups and government agencies to improve air and water quality.
