A serious threat is spreading through the forests of Big Bear. The Goldspotted Oak Borer (GSOB) is a non-native beetle that was accidentally introduced to the San Bernardino Mountains through transported firewood. This destructive insect is now threatening to decimate the area’s treasured California Black Oaks. But there are steps that can be taken to help protect these trees:
  • Do not move infested firewood – transporting firewood spreads the beetle.
  • Learn how to identify signs of infestation in Black Oaks.
  • Treat infected trees as soon as possible to help slow the spread.
You are invited to attend a hands-on opportunity where you will:
  • Learn how to identify Goldspotted Oak Borer infestations
  • Help survey Black Oak trees for signs of GSOB
  • Learn about treatment and management options to protect local forests
Be prepared for a 2-4 mile hike, off-trail, on uneven terrain.
This is a great opportunity to learn about forest health, contribute to conservation efforts, and help protect the iconic oak trees of the San Bernardino Mountains.
