Moderate 7 mi, 1280 gain/loss. Starting from the Santa Margarita entrance, well enter the park and take Live Oak Trail all the way to Vista Point, for good views all across the Saddleback Valley to the coast. Descend on Vista Trail, scenic but steep in places, then to the main park entrance on Hoffman-Homestead. A short climb on Mesa Trail takes us back to the bluffs overlooking the park (scenic views, picnic tables, bathrooms!) where we can stop for picnic lunch while enjoying a very flat return to our starting point. Meet 8:30 am at the park entrance on El Camino Montana (between Primrose and Dante) in Rancho Santa Margarita. Bring 2 l. water, snack/lunch, hiking shoes, sun protection, poles may be helpful. Rain cancels. Ldrs: Ed Maurer (949) 357-9931 and Helen Maurer. Please plan to attend for the entire hike. Sierra Club rules have changed, and we want no early sign outs.
