RSVP Deadline: June 1st
Bringing a guest(s)? Please submit a separate RSVP with each additional attendee's name and information so we have an accurate headcount! The Farmworker Association of Florida (FWAF) will guide us through a two hour bus tour, teaching us about the toxic history of Lake Apopka and sharing the lived experiences of farmworkers. The area's history includes "50 years of pesticides washed from land to lake during periodic floodings, two Superfund sites where errant chemical companies had spilled high doses of pesticides into the lake, sewage and orange pulp waste, a medical waste incinerator, and an enormous landfill" (Kline, 2013, p. 1). The toxicity of pesticides have had a significant impact on the health of families as well as the ecosystem and wildlife. The Farmworker Association Of Florida has been building power with Farmworkers, diverse workers and Rural low-income communities throughout Florida for over 40 years, since 1982.
Following the tour, a complimentary dinner will be served at 6:00pm at the FWAF office to kick-off the
Florida Chapter's Q2 Meeting weekend.
For the tour we recommend wearing t-shirt, long pants, closed toed shoes and socks. Plus bringing what you may need like hat, water bottle, non toxic bug spray, sunscreen; and in case of allergies, EpiPen, Benadryl, etc.
