Most of us have seen the hikes at Torrey Pines, but at the same time, not many of us have seen all of the hikes offered at Torrey Pines. A short distance away lies the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve Extension, a hidden gem with all of the elements of Torrey Pines painted in a stunning new display like a set of building blocks rearranged into a tower even grander than the original. We will first make our way through a previous fire from almost two years ago, following a flight of winding dirt stairs and a trail up to the Red Ridge, a landing of rock almost alien-like compared to the rest of the Torrey Pines area. After a photo contest, we’ll make our way back down the way we came and cross over to the half of the trail that faces the beach. We’ll have lunch here at the scenic overlook of the ocean, swapping stories about our hiking travels and just having fun, and then we’ll hike back down from the ridge and, if everyone feels up to it, we’ll make our steep ascent to the furthest point north on the Mar Scenic Trail to say “We’ve made it all the way up!” before we head back to our cars (or second lunch. The restaurants here are great).
