We are pleased to provide an enlightening evening on the Cape Fear River, with Mr. Roger D. Shew (Geology/Environmental Studies lecturer at UNCW). While cruising the river with Wilmington Water Tours, you'll have the chance to hear about the history and preservation of Eagles Island, as well as the potential for successful ecotourism on the island.
Eagles Island has a long and interesting history with the Gullah Geechee rice culture, naval stores manufacture and shipping, and maritime shipyard and numerous wrecks along the riverfront. It is also recognized as a North Carolina Natural Heritage site that includes rich tidal freshwater wetlands and primary nursery grounds. Access is by boat and a series of paddle trails are proposed for access to visit and experience the history and beauty of the island and surrounding waterways.
Sierra Club is happy to be able to organize this special trip for members and non-members, and provide snacks/sandwiches. You are welcome to bring water, however non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks are to be purchased at the bar on board.
We are requesting a $15 donation to help with these costs. We have setup a PayPal account to collect the $15. Please use this link for PayPal. However, you can bring cash or a check (payable to "Cape Fear Sierra Club") to our next monthly speaker program held at Halyburton Park Nature Center on Tuesday, May 12th. Your registration will only be complete when you register on the Sierra Club website "and" pay the $15.00. We expect it to be a popular event, so do not delay.
Please dress for potential inclement weather. The boat trip runs rain or shine, however heavy rain and wind can cancel the event. Flat soled shoes are best due to possible wave action. Meet us at the dock at 212 S. Water St. at 5:30pm. Boarding starts at 5:45pm. We will be leaving on time (6:00pm), so plan on extra time to park, etc.
Level: Easy (Easy access to ferry boat)
Cost: $15.00
Signup Instructions: Use the Sierra Club website for registration and PayPal for submission of the $15.00.
Recommended Items: open air boat ride; dress for the weather. Binoculars for viewing birds.
