Join master birder Melinda Welton on the Warner Park’s Burch Reserve Trail. We’re starting early for a slow stroll of the fields and deciduous woods on the lower portions of the Burch in hopes of spying the last of our migrating visitors and our beautiful permanent residents.
The lower elevations of the Burch contain remnants of old homesites and have been maintained to include grasslands, a few small ponds, and a wetland area that serves as an important watering hole for wildlife and habitat for amphibians. Recent ice storm damage opened the forest edges and has added more avian brush habitat.
Suitable for children age 12 and up. No dogs allowed on this trail.
You never know what you’ll see and hear on the trails, but we stand a better chance of spotting birds in the company of wildlife biologist Melinda Welton.
Melinda has been involved in bird conservation since overseeing the reintroduction of bald eagles and peregrine falcons in North Carolina in the 1980s. Her work has taken her from the mountains of Northeast Tennessee to Central America, identifying lands essential to bird migration. The cerulean warbler has inspired much of her work. Currently she is a board member of TennGreen Land Conservancy, co-chair of the Conservation Committee for the Tennessee Ornithological Society, co-founder of Bird Safe Nashville, and she serves on the Purple Martin Task Force.
