Reversing Russian River degradation from the Mining Era- Pits to Parks.
Imagine a massive, 358-acre restoration project, filled with native vegetation, and walk-in/kayak-in campsites on a beautiful stretch of the Russian River. The project will convert a channelized and incised section of river back to historic floodplain, restoring natural river processes. What is currently a series of severely polluted, disused gravel-mining pits is being completely reimagined as a public park and a thriving habitat for both land and water critters. In fact, scientists have stated this project carries the same ecological potential for salmon recovery as a dam removal.
The Sierra Club passionately supports exploring, enjoying, and protecting our wild places and is publicizing an upcoming “talk and walk” hosted by Russian Riverkeeper. Come hear from Don McEnhill, Deputy Director of Russian Riverkeeper, about how this transformed space will support endangered fish (like salmon and steelhead trout) and help our community build resilience against future climate change.
· When: August 8, 9a.m. - 11 a.m.
· Where: On the West side of Windsor – please signup for the address.
