Cowles via Big Rock Trail Hike

We will explore a less-traveled route to the top of Cowles Mountain via Big Rock Trail in Santee. The leader will talk about leaving no trace behind. There is a steep, slippery section at the top. Be prepared for limited visibility on the way down.

Join us for a fun 4.9 mile evening hike up to Cowles Mountain summit via Big Rock Trail. The Big Rock Trail heads uphill to the Cowles Service Road, and we will follow this to the summit of Cowles Mountain to climb just over 1200 feet in elevation gain. From the top there are awesome 360 degree views of the San Diego area.

Requirements: hiking shoes, at least 2 liters of water, snack, a backpack to carry your stuff, sun protection, a headlamp or flashlight.

Recommended: hiking poles


 

Level: Moderate (5 miles, 1200 feet gain)

Signup Instructions: contact the leader at 18582121758 or at the email address cremarie1@gmail.com to express interest.

Recommended Items: Snacks, at least 2 liters of water, sun protection, trekking poles for those with poor balance, a headlamp or flashlight. The leader might check for some of these items.

Signup Restrictions: Participants must contact the leader regarding signup no later than Thursday 5/7/2026 @6PM. Any new signups after that point will not be accepted, with exception to pop-up emergencies.

Additional Directions: Cell phone contact preferred and more reliable

Carpool: If you are available to drive for a carpool, let the leader know. If you want or need to carpool, let the leader know so he can ask those who offered to drive if they would be comfortable coordinating with you for carpooling. The leader is not responsible for anything else regarding carpooling. This is not a guarantee that a carpool will be available or willing to meet you to drive you to the trailhead. However, carpooling is encouraged. Parking is limited.

Note: Carpool transportation is at the sole risk of the participants.
