Description:
Enjoy a fall evening with a hike on the Winchell Trail that traces the edge of the Mississippi River gorge. From the trail, we look out across the river to the opposite slope which hopefully will be illuminated by late evening light. Eagles and other birds and wildlife might be seen from this trail just steps away from a busy urban neighborhood. We will be walking a section of the trail to the north of where we hiked before and will visit a sand beach on the river shore. Total distance is about 2 miles.
Hike rating: Moderate – The first part of the walk will be on a mostly level, packed dirt path just above a steep drop off to the river. We will descend a series of steps to reach the river. On the return, we will walk on the paved path along West River Road.
Gear or food/water needs:
No special gear needed, but a camera and binoculars would be useful.
Level: Moderate
