Ivy City DC Trek
The Ivy City DC trek is an urban hike to see first hand conditions in Ivy City, which is characterized by community advocates as an Overburdened Community. This means residents experience disproportionate environmental harm and risks. This urban hike is considered easy and will be on flat ground, mostly sidewalks, for a distance of apx 4.5 miles. We will meet at the ground-level eastern exit of the NoMa-Gallaudet metro stop at 9am, and depart for Ivy City at 9:15. We will walk past the Union Market and along the boundary of Gallaudet University to the Empower DC Clubhouse, where we will meet Empower DC staff who will tour us around sites in the Ivy City neighborhood. We will visit the site of National Engineering Products, a manufacturer of adhesives that has been releasing carcinogenic air pollutants into the residential neighborhood for nearly 100 years. The return hike will end at the Union Market (a 10 minute walk from the NoMa-Gallaudet metro stop), where participants may browse the hall shops and have lunch.
