O: Lower Peaks #2- Pleasures of Santa Anita Cyn: Mt Zion, Sturtevant Camp
Join us for an enjoyable loop hike in our local mountains that has it all: shady canyons, 3 historic camps from the early 1900s Great Hiking Era, a Lower Peaks List peak, and a splash in a waterfall. From Chantry Flat we ascend gently up the shady canyon of Winter Creek with a stop at Hoegees Camp for a break. We then leave the shade for a while to top Mount Zion, continuing on to historic Sturtevant Camp for lunch, then descending back into the shade of the main Santa Anita Canyon, them after a break, a little uphill back to Adams Pack Station for refreshments and the cars. Total for the day is 8.6 miles with 2300 gain. Moderate pace. Bring lug soles liquide and lunch, and poles for the multiple stream crossings. This is a backcountry outing. Sign up below, then contact primary leader Jim Hagar for meeting time and location. Route is here: https://caltopo.com/m/5FCP7JV

Join us for an enjoyable loop hike in our local mountains that has it all: shady canyons, 3 historic camps from the early 1900s “Great Hiking Era” on trails built by Wilbur Sturtevant, a Lower Peaks List peak, and a splash in a waterfall. From Chantry Flat we ascend gently up the shady canyon of Winter Creek with a stop at Hoegees Camp for a break. We then leave the shade for a while for a steep climb to top Mount Zion, continuing on to historic Sturtevant Camp for lunch, then descending back into the shade of the main Santa Anita Canyon and down to Sturtevant Falls for a splash, or just relax, before a little uphill back to Adam’s Pack Station for refreshments and the cars.
