Join us for a hike in Southeast Ann Arbor’s Mary Beth Doyle Park. Mallets Creek runs through the park and is channeled through a 12-acre wetland that was built to protect water quality, slow down erosion and prevent flooding downstream.  The wetland and surrounding woodlands are home to a variety of wildlife and native plants.  This is a great time of year to see migrating birds! We will start with a walk around the wetlands and pond (an easy, paved path) and then take a 2-mile hike through the adjacent woodland on an unpaved path with a narrow boardwalk.  Bring binoculars if you have them, and if you don’t, we will have several pairs to borrow.  Kids welcome.  FYI, the wooded path can be muddy if it rains before our hike.

Level: Moderate

Cost: Free

Signup Instructions: Participation in Sierra Club activities requires registration and acceptance of a waiver, which you can complete online at the link above. Electronic copies of the required waiver are available online or by request and will be accepted automatically by signing-in to the event. All hikes are free and open to everyone. Please watch your email for outing-related updates or changes. We normally send a reminder the day before each outing. Occasionally, we may need to send last-minute updates because of unusually heavy traffic, trailhead parking closures or other unexpected circumstances.

Recommended Items: For all our hikes, please remember to bring comfortable hiking shoes, a water bottle, snacks if needed, and seasonally appropriate clothing. We will have bug spray and sunscreen available (or you can bring your own). To help prevent tick bites, wear light-colored clothing so ticks are easier to spot, and consider long sleeves and long pants when hiking in grassy or wooded areas. After returning home, check your body and clothing for ticks, shower soon after coming indoors, and wash and dry your clothes on high heat, which can help kill any ticks that may be present.

Additional Directions: We will meet at 8:45 am and begin our hike at 9 am. There are several entrances to Mary Beth Doyle Park. We will meet at the 3500 Birch Hollow Drive entrance, in front of the rain garden, next to the parking lot. The hike will conclude around 11 am.

Cancellation Policy: Activity is held rain or shine, but may be altered due to inclement weather
