!All Hands on Deck for Climate, Clean Energy & Salmon!

Right now, two major decisions are moving through Washington state that will shape our climate, our utility bills, and the future of salmon across the Pacific Northwest for decades to come. Both are coming to a head this fall, and both need Sierra Club and community supporters to speak up. 

Join us on Zoom on Tuesday, September 22nd at 4:00 PM to get caught up and learn how to influence the outcomes.

The first is a rate case in front of the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission (UTC). Puget Sound Energy is asking regulators to approve a rate hike that would raise a typical customer's monthly electric bill by nearly 30 percent by 2029. Much of that money would not go toward clean, reliable energy. Instead, it would fund converting the Centralia coal plant to burn methane gas, expanding PSE's gas pipeline system, and even piping experimental hydrogen into homes and businesses. It’s an expensive plan that asks ratepayers to underwrite more fossil fuel infrastructure into the coming decades.

The second is the Northwest Power and Conservation Council's Ninth Power Plan, a 20 year roadmap that will guide how Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and western Montana meet a real and rapidly growing need for electricity over the next two decades. It helps decide whether our region invests in energy efficiency, demand response, and clean renewable power or leans on new natural gas plants. Because this plan also shapes how the Columbia and Snake River dams are operated, the outcome matters just as much for salmon and steelhead as it does for our energy bills.

Both decisions come down to the same basic choice: choose a smart path that keeps energy affordable, protects fish habitat, and slows climate change or keep pouring more and more money into fossil fuel infrastructure. The outcome depends on who shows up, and everyday voices like yours can genuinely move both of these decisions.
