Are you a San Diego Chapter Outings Leader planning to lead backcountry outings?
Beginning January 1, 2027, Sierra Club Outings Safety Policy requires leaders conducting backcountry outings to hold a current Wilderness First Aid (WFA) certification. Backcountry is defined as a location where a professional, state-regulated Emergency Medical Services (EMS) team cannot reach the group within one to two hours by vehicle, foot, or helicopter.
If you plan to lead backcountry outings, now is a great opportunity to get certified!
This Wilderness First Aid course is open to San Diego Chapter Outings Leaders and provides practical, hands-on training for responding to injuries and medical emergencies when professional help may be hours away.
Prerequisite – Adult CPR/AED Certification
Participants must hold a current Adult CPR/AED certification. If you do not currently have one or your certification is about to expire, a 4-hour Adult CPR/AED course will be offered at another time. (TBD)
Participants are to bring their own snacks, lunch, and drinks on Saturday and Sunday.
Wilderness First Aid Course Schedule
Attendance for the entire WFA course is mandatory:
Saturday & Sunday | 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
Because this is a certification course, participants must attend all instructional sessions and successfully complete the required skills evaluations and scenarios to receive certification. Registration includes the Wilderness First Aid digital student book and digital certification.
Come prepared with an open mind, a willingness to learn, and a readiness to challenge yourself both mentally and physically. Wilderness First Aid is an intensive, hands-on course combining classroom instruction, practical skills, and realistic outdoor scenarios. While challenging, it is also engaging, rewarding, and a lot of fun!
