Mining Here and Elsewhere: Who Has to Sacrifice?
Author Talk, Local Panel and Community Conversation on Building the Future We WantJoin us to learn about the dangers of mining abroad and here at home and how we can protect our communities. Event includes:
- A presentation from award winning journalist, Nicolas Niarchos (The Elements of Power: A Story of War, Technology, and the Dirtiest Supply Chain on Earth) on his research in the Democratic Republic of Congo where lives are lost and human rights are trampled in the quest for minerals.
- A panel of local activists discussing proposed sulfide-ore mines in Minnesota that threaten precious water, manoomin (wild rice), and the health of surrounding communities. The panel includes Kelly Applegate (Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe), Leanna Goose (Rise & Repair) and lawyer Evan Mulholland (Minnesota Center for Env. Advocacy).
- Solutions! Stay to learn from groups working on the issue and take action for solutions like possible regulations on data centers, ensuring environmental laws are enforced and human rights are respected.
It is up to us, here in Minnesota and across the world, to fight for the energy future we really want – one with clean water, a healthy climate and living-wage jobs for all. We must not settle for what international corporations tell us we need, whether that is a new data center or a new mine, and the destruction to our planet and communities their profits demand. Endless extraction and growth are not the answer.
This event is co-sponsored by Sierra Club and Hennepin County Library, in association with Congo Week and funded in part by MELSA.
