Water for People & the Environment: Environmental Flows and River Ecosystems
Given the diversity of hydrological sensitivities and growing populations across Texas, it is increasingly important for resource professionals, policymakers, and citizens to understand the demands placed upon aquatic resources so that riverine systems can be managed in a manner that supports ecological resilience while meeting the growing social and economic needs of the state. Although Texas has enacted legislation aimed at improving scientific understanding of environmental flow requirements, challenges remain that involve a variety of competing socioeconomic interests, the stochastic nature of fluvial processes, and the ecological responses to changing flow regimes. This presentation provides an overview of environmental flow concepts, discusses challenges associated with implementation, and highlights field-based observations from the San Antonio and San Marcos Rivers that illustrate relationships between hydrologic and ecological processes.
