🌿 Hike and Dine at Elfin Forest Natural Preserve
📅 Date: Saturday, October 24, 2026⏰ Time: 10:00 a.m.📍 Location: 15th Street Trailhead, Los Osos
🗺️ Directions
- Take Los Osos Valley Road west out of San Luis Obispo.
- Drive approximately 9.8 miles west until you reach South Bay Boulevard.
- Turn right onto South Bay Boulevard and drive approximately 1.4 miles north.
- Turn left onto Santa Ysabel Avenue and continue for 2 blocks.
- Turn right onto 15th Street and proceed to the end of the street for parking and trailhead access.
🅿️ Parking: There are several parking spaces at the end of 15th Street, but additional parking may be available in the neighborhood.
🥾 Trail Details
- 📏 Distance: 1+ miles
- ⛰️ Elevation Change: Approximately 80 feet
- 😊 Difficulty: Easy — more of a stroll than a hike
- 🌲 Trail Surface: Largely an elevated wooden boardwalk
This easy stroll winds through the Elfin Forest Natural Preserve, home to a rare pygmy forest of stunted Coast Live Oaks, many of which are estimated to be 200–400 years old.🌊 Along the way, enjoy beautiful views of the Morro Bay Estuary, Morro Rock, salt marshes, and the nearby Nine Sisters volcanic peaks. The preserve is also an excellent area for birdwatching, so birders are encouraged to bring binoculars. 🔭 If you have a spotting scope, please bring it along!
📝 Important Notes
- 🥾 This is an easy stroll rather than a strenuous hike.
- 👟 Wear comfortable walking shoes.
- 💧 Bring water and dress in layers.
- 🚻 There are NO restrooms at the Elfin Forest Natural Preserve.
- 🐦 Birders: Bring your binoculars! A spotting scope would also be welcome if you have one.
