Pop-up Event - NIPSCO: No Coal, No AI Data Centers
Lets raise awareness in the local community so people know NIPSCO may be breaking its promise to retire the Michigan City Coal Plant, and to pressure the company to keep its commitment to retire the plant. Participation is easy: meet us at the park; we will have yard signs for people to wave at passing cars, and we'll take photos/videos and invite the press to cover the event to amplify our impact! We will also be spending time together after sign waving, discussing what is going on with NIPSCO and data center issues.
Pullman Park, 550 W 4th St, Michigan City, IN 46360 (Skate Park Shelter)

More about NIPSCO and what's at stake:
This year, NIPSCO is developing a 20-Year Energy Plan that will guide its energy generation decisions in the years ahead. As part of that planning process, NIPSCO is evaluating whether to continue operating the Michigan City Coal Plant instead of retiring it in 2028. The Michigan City Coal Plant remains a major polluter in the region and is currently sending its coal ash to Jasper County, where NIPSCO is evaluating whether to continue operating its Schahfer coal plant.
NIPSCO is hosting its planning meetings at Fair Oaks Farms, despite requests from Just Transition Northwest Indiana and other advocacy organizations to hold some of these meetings in Michigan City and other impacted communities. As far as we know, NIPSCO has no plans to involve the local community in a decision about the future of the Michigan City Coal Plant. We want to change that by highlighting that NIPSCO may break its promise to retire the plant, and by sending a clear message to the company to keep its commitment and stop attracting AI data centers to the region.
NIPSCO GenCo, its spinoff company, is already ramping up fossil fuels for data centers, building a massive gas plant in Jasper County that Amazon is purchasing power from, and facilitating the secretive purchase of power from the Merom Coal Plant for tech giants Google and Amazon.
This event will happen just days before the next 20 Year Energy Planning meeting, which is taking place on Oct. 20; details here. You can let the Sierra Club know whether you plan to attend the Oct. 20 meeting here and we will keep you up to date on the latest information about the 20 Year Energy Plan.
