iNaturalist is a powerful app for your smart phone that collects nature pictures that you take and tells you what you are seeing. At the same time, the data you collect helps scientists understand the health of populations of animals, plants, insects and fungi contributed by iNaturalist users over time and location. In fact, iNaturalist is the largest citizen-science application in the world, and it is fun and educational to use, and it is making a real difference in conservation efforts worldwide especially during an era of climate change and biodiversity loss.

At this meeting, led by Stephen Lewis, Chair of the Sierra Club Greater Hartford Group, founder of the South Windsor Pollinator Pathway, and an avid iNaturalist user, there will be an overview of how to get up and running with the free iNaturalist app on your phone, and learn what it is and does, and can do for you, and how you can become more knowledgeable about the plants, animals and insects you see while providing help to wildlife conservation.

We encourage you to watch this short (9 min) inspirational TED Talk on the scientific and conservation value of using iNaturalist.

Following the training on how to use iNaturalist, join us a short casual hike to practice using the app in the field with guidance and Q&A while we find species to identify. The hike will be held on Saturday, July 26 at 9:00 AM at the Belding Wildlife Preserve in Vernon, CT, more info here.  Finally, on on Monday July 28th at 7pm, we’ll host a follow-up virtual meeting to discuss more advanced use of iNaturalist, more info here.
